Marshall works in a style similar to early California plein painters with a mixture of strong brushwork and glazes to capture the contrasting luminescence of the sky and the energy of the sea.

“The painting principles must first be learned as a writer must learn a vocabulary. As we proceed into a painting we can begin to realize a fine-tuning, our guidance from within. As we learn to trust this inner teacher, let go, feel the depths of ourselves, we begin to realize the true painting process. The process beyond the classroom and intellect, somewhere deep in feeling, emotion and passion. Transformed by this strange mixture of color and emotion emerges the “emotional painter”, the one that counts. My hope is to always reach this state with each and every painting that is created. This is the reward, that one moment of touching something unknown. THIS IS PAINTING!!! –Barry Marshall
